The following outlines typical engagement milestones for refugees over a 12-month settlement period. These timeframes are indicative and designed to balance early support with a gradual transition toward independence.
0–6 weeks
Introduction to digital services, including setting up and using myGov
Early engagement support to assist with understanding payments and service access
Participation is voluntary and focused on building foundational capability
8–10 weeks
Multicultural Service Officer-led information sessions
Reinforcement of key service information and obligations
Continued voluntary participation
At 12 weeks
Appointment at a Services Australia service centre to establish initial reporting requirements and discuss a Job Plan
No mandatory referral to employment services at this stage
Individuals may choose to voluntarily engage with Workforce Australia if eligible
12 weeks to 12 months
No mandatory job search requirements during this period; voluntary participation encouraged
Engagement in approved activities, including language learning through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), where applicable
Attend Services Australia and HSP Provider appointments
Fortnightly income reporting required to maintain payments, accessible via phone, online services via myGov, in person or via the mobile app - Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.
12 months +
A system-generated face-to-face appointment is scheduled
Individuals are supported to understand mutual obligations and ongoing requirements
Completion of a Jobseeker Snapshot to assess readiness and support needs
Based on assessment, referral to appropriate employment services, including Workforce Australia (provider-led or online services)
Development of a tailored Job Plan aligned to individual circumstances and goals
This structured, phased approach ensures individuals are supported at each stage of their settlement journey, with increasing independence and connection to employment pathways over time.
