About the Multicultural Service Officers

Multicultural Service Officers, delivered by Services Australia, are designed to ensure that migrant and refugee communities can access essential payments, programs, and supports in a timely, culturally responsive, and accessible manner. Multicultural Service Officers (MSOs), operate nationally to strengthen engagement between government services and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

MSOs play a critical interface role—bridging service delivery with community need. Through targeted engagement, they support individuals to navigate often complex systems, while also informing continuous improvement within government services by elevating community insights.

Their work contributes to equitable access, improved service outcomes, and a more inclusive system that recognises the diverse experiences of new arrivals across Australia.

Multicultural Service Officers work collaboratively with community groups, service providers, and government stakeholders to:

• promote and improve access to payments and services

• build trusted relationships across communities and government

• enhance service delivery through a deeper understanding of CALD needs

• provide support in complex or sensitive cases

• facilitate effective communication through language services

• strengthen cultural competency among frontline staff

• elevate the visibility and impact of multicultural services within government systems.
